Robin's Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy is a little different from other people. I am not a typical person who wants to teach in a suburb school, I am interested in going into the most poverty stricken schools where almost all children have issues in the home and can easily fall into bad situations. I think that due to this want my philosophy differs from others in a few ways. One important aspect of teaching is creating a safe zone. Students come to school from many different home situations and the classroom should always be a place that they feel comfortable. This includes treating every student the same and with respect and making sure fellow students do the same. As a teacher you should also be a trusted adult. Students should be able to come to you with any problem and feel that they can tell you anything; whether it is family problems or not understanding a school concept.
Another important aspect is the teacher understanding that you have a large responsibility when you become a teacher. As a teacher you are molding lives and influencing children. You have the responsibility not only to teach them the core curriculum and academic ideas but also be a role model. As a elementary teacher you need to set an example and teach honesty, integrity, respect, sharing, and other key moral/ social elements that children need to learn in order to be successful in life. Also, as a teacher you also must be creative and fun. No one likes a boring classroom where the same things are repeated everyday. As a teacher you must find a way to keep students interested while learning at the same time. Integrating technology and online resources is one way to be creative. Also, students learn in different ways and by explaining concepts in different way and being creative, every student will find a way to understand the information.
Overall, my teaching philosophy is all about the students. As a teacher, the students must be the main concern and center of attention. School is not just academic but also part of life and so teachers must teach not just academics but also how to be successful and use the tools students have to be successful in life.
